Hi friends! This is Day 2 of Techniques month, where I plan to show you a different technique every day. This is a very common method to use if you need to overlap two stamped images. I used the retired Cup of Tea stamp set; along with Tahitian Tide ink for the teacup, and Garden Green ink for the lemon slice, because lemon slices are green, right? 🤣 I just wanted to make sure you could see the differences, and I’m not sure yellow ink would accomplish that!
With masking, you are working from the front to the back. If you only want part of a stamped image to show, you will need to make a mask of the other image. In the image below, you only want the top part of the lemon slice to show, as you want it to appear to be inside the cup. This is what it looks like before masking:

We need to make a mask of the teacup. Stamp your image on your paper, then take either a piece of scrap paper or a sticky note, and the stamp the image again onto it. If you’re using a sticky note, stamp towards the top of it so that part of the stickiness is on the back of your stamped image.
Cut out your image; you should have 2 matching cups.

Stick it right on top of your original stamped image. If you’re not using a sticky note, place a glue dot on the back of your mask and touch it with your finger several times. This will help to reduce its stickiness, and you will be able to easily remove it later.
Stamp your lemon slice onto the cup and mask where you want it to be.

Remove your mask, and you have a perfectly combined image with no extra lines showing.

As you can see, the teacup appears to be in the front, and the lemon slice behind it, so that’s why this method often refers to it as working from the front to the back.
If you prefer not to fuss with glue dots or sticky notes, Stampin’ Up! sells masking paper in sheets that already have the adhesive on them, and you just need to stamp and cut out your designs.
Happy Crafting!
