Step-by-Step Guide to Heat Embossing Your Art

, ,

Heat embossing is the process of applying heat to an image stamped using VersaMark ink to make it pop out. It’s a great way to make your cards stand out with little effort.

What You Need

There are three basic supplies you’ll need to get started: a heat tool, a VersaMark ink pad, and embossing powder.

VersaMark is a clear ink. u press your stamp onto it like any other ink pad, then stamp your image onto your paper. If you are using white cardstock, the image will be almost invisible. If stamping onto colored cardstock, it appears a few shades darker than the cardstock.

Embossing powder is a fine powder that you sprinkle over your image after you have used VersaMark ink. It comes in many colors, and once heated, it provides texture and gloss to your stamped image.

A heat tool melts embossing powder to provide the stamped image with a glossy texture. The one Stampin’ Up! sells has two heat settings: low for drying ink, and high for heat setting powder. I can vouch for the durability of the product, as I’ve had mine for fourteen years Please do not use a hair dryer, as the heat is too intense and may scorch your paper.

The Details….

Ink up your stamp with VersaMark ink and stamp onto your paper.

Sprinkle embossing powder over your stamped image. Shake off the excess powder- you can use a small brush to get it away from your image.

Use a small paper plate to catch the excess powder, and then you can easily pour it back into the jar to minimize waste.

Use your heat tool on the high setting and move it back and forth over the image. You will be able to tell when the powder is melted because it will have a glossy sheen and brighter appearance. Do not leave the heat tool over one area too long after the powder is melted as it may damage the paper.

It’s fun to see the powder change to a bright glossy image! If you need further help, please reach out, and I’ll be happy to help you.

    Happy Embossing!
